Golf Mat's Can Hurt Your Swing

During the winter months there isn't much of an option for most of the country to practice let alone play a round of golf on real grass. There are ways to golf during the winter months and that includes going to an indoor range or a simulator but the problem with golf mats or a hard flat surface is the limited ability to get under the ball.
Now there are plenty always to get around the old flat green golf mats but lets talk about why these mats may not be the best option for your golf game. When hitting from a golf mat your swing speed can take a significant reduction. Since there isn't a true ground for your feet to grip and your spikes can not dig into the ground. The security you would have is greatly reduced and with this feeling of less security you may not swing as hard. It’s unclear how much that lower limb acceleration affects your overall distance, but it stands to reason that because you’re practicing moving your limbs at different speeds than they are at the course, it could hurt both your timing and your overall distance.
A big problem with hitting on golf mats is the ability to get under the ball. Using clubs with a higher loft like an 8 or a 9 iron and of course your wedges, can be very difficult. The ideal shot pattern for these club is a high trajectory and the best way to accomplish that is to get under the ball. By using these higher loft clubs on the mat you are also increasing the risk of injury to your wrists or really any other body part the you incorporate into your swing. Although you can hit the ball off the top of the turf and not make a divot, remember to incorporate that swing in to your game since it will change the entire flight of the ball and that might be enough to hinder your game.
Since you are not able to fully get under the ball, putting spin on the ball can be more difficult resulting in less ball movement when your ball hits the ground. Although spin doesn't effect every shot, it can change your game if you get too much into the habit of hitting on mats and not achieving the spin you would like.
When you get on the course and get under the ball you could be shocked with the spin on the ball which can change the outcome of your shot.
At the end of the day it is your game but just remember the more consistent you can be the better you will play and the easier it will be to learn from your mistakes.
